North Shore & Pearl Harbor

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

When we were on Oahu last week we rented a car and spent New Years Day on the North Shore.
We've been driving on the left side of the road for the past 6 months so it was BANANAS
being on the right side again.
I may or may not have reverted back to the left at one point
resulting in loud shouting from my sweet husband...
I wish I had a picture of us swimming with the huge sea turtles.. they're incredible.
{miles of pineapple fields}
We spent the first few nights at the Hale Koa on Waikiki beach, which is a fantastic resort owned by the Army, exclusive to military. Highly recommend it to all you mil fams! Another well-kept secret is Ford Island where we stayed our last nights.. in the middle of Pearl Harbor. It's owned by the Navy and is a very special place surrounded by the memorials to the 2,402 Americans killed by the 1941 Japanese attack...
which is what led, eventually, to the reason we're living in Okinawa right now.
It amazes me to think about what happened in Pearl Harbor & our attacks on Japan and then to think how strong & fully-intertwined our relationship with Japan is today.
And that we're personally getting to live out that relationship each day over here.
{USS Missouri "Mighty Mo" that can fire 2,700lb ammo 23 miles in 50 seconds -- babe, that was for you!}

I'm starting to plan our next trips.. and literally can't stop dancing around I'm soo excited.
Thailand & Ha Long Bay, Vietnam...

  6. I've always wanted to go to Pearl Harbor but I don't know if I can emotionally handle it. Such a horrible event. It is amazing how those bonds have formed, especially after Hiroshima and the other twenty or so bombs we dropped on them. You're right that it's neat that you have the opportunity to live out history in such a way.

    Can't wait to see your photos from your next events. Vietnam sounds fun!
