Camping Ikei Island

Monday, May 14, 2012

We packed up the Jimney this weekend after diving and set out to beach camp on one of Oki's
outer islands.  Ikei {remember this beautiful place?} is a really small island with a tiny population
{I think only one village?} with nearly all farmland and rugged coastline.  You have to cross a cute red bridge from another island to get out to it, and when you do, the narrow road weaves along the inlets and coves until you hit farms.
Somewhere in the farmland we found a narrow overgrown path:
that led to this:
dearest loveliest Okinawa, you are just full of treasures.  and we adore you for it.
this spot easily ranked as one of the best we've ever camped at together. it is so utterly peaceful being on the beach with just the sound of crashing waves and the ocean breeze through the trees.
and the stars!! oh the stars. we laid in the sand around our campfire and stared in awe.
of our Great God.
we stayed up really late talking but still set our alarm to get up and watch the sunrise together.
we were motivated...  until the alarm went off.
we barely squinted out at the pink sky before mumbling something unintelligible {and maybe a curse word in German} as our heads hit the pillow and we fell back into a comatose sleep.
he makes the best bonfires ever.
there's our Meaghan Leister gifted picnic wine carrier again that we bring everywhere with us!
{turq sea glass is my favorite of all}
who brings fancy bubbly water camping, you ask?
I do, that's who.  turns out campings got a feminine side, too.  hear, hear!

do you all like to camp?
hope you had a beautiful weekend celebrating your Mamas!

  3. The first 2 photos remind me a lot of Gabon. There are so many of those roads leading to deserted beaches. Unfortunately, it's not really safe enough to be out there alone let alone camp. I'd love to though - especially when the sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs!

  4. I LOVE camping, although I start to crave a shower after a few days if it's so remote that there isn't one available. This looks incredible and insanely romantic :)

I have the sea glass you sent me on my computer right now! I seriously look at it 10 times a day and think about you guys 8 of those times (the other 2 I completely space out and am probably thinking about what we'll eat for dinner and if wine will be involved...)
Love that you guys have turned into natives that camp solo on a deserted beach and traipse through the jungle. When you start talking to Wilson-type volleyballs we might need to get you back to the mainland for a month :)
    LOVE YOU! lanneybear
