A Walk Through the Oldest City in Croatia

Monday, July 11, 2016

Stari Grad on the island of Hvar is the oldest city in Croatia, settled by the Greeks in 384 BC.  It's also the small, beautiful port town where we stayed while on Hvar. If you wander the narrow streets, you'll find bougainvillea and oleander spilling over the stone walls, St. Stephen's Church with it's deep ringing bell tower and little squares all along the way lined with colorful shutters. It's an incredibly quiet town during the day. We drank coffee each morning in the main square with only a handful of others sitting at the various cafes drinking plum brandy or Ožujsko beer! But it totally transforms in the evenings. Families, couples and groups of local kids of all ages are out walking along the harbor and playing soccer and tag in the squares.

This was our street for the week.

The main square. Can you spot my love at a table with a glass of wine?!

The lady who lives here is so sweet... you can't see her in this shot but each time we walked by she was sitting just inside her balcony and would smile and wave at our kids.

Sweetest little boy!! We took the two hour nighttime ferry back from Hvar to Split and this boy was so happy to miss his bedtime, explore the boat in the cool of the evening, watch the sunset over the islands (it was gorgeous!) and learn about the moon and stars in the sky from his Daddy.

  3. Do you ever get sad building a life and seeing so much without your close friends and family nearby? Does it get lonely?

    1. Hi Linda! We do miss our families (especially our parents) of course, but no, it doesn't ever get lonely because we're together as a family all the time! We have each other and there's no one we'd rather be with more! The Lord also gives us good friends wherever we are.
