Christmas Life zagreb

Advent in Zagreb!

Zagreb just won Best Christmas Market for the second year in a row. We thought last year was amazing, but they’ve really outdone themselves this year. The whole center is covered in twinkle lights with stands in nearly every square selling kuhano vino (mulled wine) serenaded by live Christmas bands. The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Zagreb. It’s magical right now! Our Croatian friends keep joking about the electricity bill the city is going to have afterwards;)

The best way to experience Advent in Zagreb is the best way to experience this beautiful city the rest of the year — walk the whole old city, discovering the squares and cobblestone streets around every bend. There is so much to see this year with the markets, but our favorite spots are in Zrinjevac Park and Upper Town in Gornji Grad around St. Mark’s and St. Catherine’s. This is the least crowded part of the markets and the most romantic! The city opened up a number of courtyards, creating small, intimate spaces to drink mulled wine, ice skate and listen to live musicians. I took this photo above on a Monday night around 5:30pm when it had just opened, before anyone arrived.

Some things not to miss! Explore the markets with kuhano vino in hand, warm fritule, kobasice (local cured sausage and so good!), try the local sarma in European Square, watch the brass concerts from Christmas balconies, the Live Nativity Scene infront of the Zagreb Cathedral, shop for ornaments and local lavender products, buy an amazingly affordable bunch of holly or handmade wreath in the Dolac Market and have dinner in cozy Pod Zidom… Just to name a few!

We’re going to enjoy this next week of Advent and Christmas, so I’ll be back to blogging after! We have a few family dates planned this week and also a few with just my husband, hooray. We lost my Mom’s brother last week and it makes me want to say again that if you also have been in need of comfort this time of year, I hope you’ll be reminded as we have that Christ coming is the comfort and the peace and the joy and the solution to that, He is the comfort and the peace and the joy and the solution to every problem, every heartache, every loneliness, every sin, for all of us. That is the Christmas spirit!

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Isaiah 9:2

I hope you will be filled with peace and joy and have a very Merry Christmas!
Thank you as always for reading!
Love, Amanda
