North Carolina Farmhouse

Farmhouse Progress: White Washed Floors

We’re finally done with the girls’ floors!! We decided to go with a white wash because a rich stain with the painted gray walls felt too dark. Their room is soft and pretty and full of light – we love how it turned out!

For anyone interested, it was very easy to do. We were inspired by the old tradition of lime washing, but this method takes minimal paint and mostly water. I used about 1 part paint to 3 parts water. Most tutorials I read used a rag to wipe off the excess, but after trying that, just using a large paint brush worked the best to apply it and keep the wash even. Just remember to go with the grain of the wood.

This was the first coat and you can see in the corner where I hadn’t applied the white wash yet. After it was all dry, Cam sealed the wood with a few coats of polyurethane.

Now we just have to add the baseboard trim & light fixture and then move our little girls into their room!!

Beautiful! I have dark wood floors with my grey walls and white trim that I love, but your choices here are so charming and really suit a little girls’ room. You have such a good eye!

Oh thank you! That’s actually what I was hoping to do (dark wood stain) but the one small window lets in so little light most of the day that it just didn’t work for this room!

It looks beautiful. I usually love a traditional stained floor, but this is just so great – particularly for the girls’ room. Great decision 🙂 Looking forward to seeing all the projects on the house.

Thank you, Logan! I know I tell you this every now and then but have to again – I think of you every time we read the Bedtime Prayers book you sent JS as a baby – it’s now Gracie’s FAVORITE. We were just reading it earlier and thought of you and then I saw your note:)
